NDSU to provide a brand-new, popular software engineering major

Fargo, North Dakota – Thanks to NDSU, a growing area of need is receiving some attention.
Beginning in the fall of 2023, the college will grant a Bachelor of Science in software engineering. The departments of computer science and electrical and computer engineering will jointly provide the curriculum.
“In recent years, the demand for software engineers has increased significantly across the United States. These positions require design expertise in both software and principles of hardware design,” said Ben Braaten, professor, and chair of electrical and computer engineering. “The degree program is a great blend for careers in engineering, software development, cybersecurity, web development, mobile app development, and gaming, to name a few.”
According to information made public by Hanover Research, there have been 1,509 job posts for positions linked to software engineering in North Dakota over the last 12 months. Over the next ten years, employment in the field is anticipated to increase by 19%.
The practice of software engineering entails the implementation of methods for the creation and upkeep of software systems. Students who are interested in professions such as software engineers or developers are advised to pursue the degree.
The curriculum at NDSU will comprise electrical and computer engineering, computer science, and related mathematics courses.
“Software engineering is a sub-discipline of computer science focusing on the software development process which includes requirement analysis, design, implementation, and testing,” said Simone Ludwig, professor, and chair of computer science. “In the software engineering curriculum, we will have two tracks – one called the Systems Programming track, which focuses on embedded systems, and the Applications Development track, which centers on methodologies, techniques, and tools to manage the software development life cycle.”
The typical annual salary range for similar professions in North Dakota for those with a bachelor’s degree in software engineering is between $75,400 and $143,800.
