Fargo-Moorhead sidewalks closed due to unusual winter flooding

Fargo, North Dakota – Because of this week’s intense rain, the cities of Moorhead and Fargo anticipate that the Red River may momentarily reach a “minor flood stage,” which would result in the closure of pedestrian walkways and bike routes.

The city of Fargo anticipates that the river will rise to eighteen feet by this afternoon, therefore the bike route on Elm Street in north Fargo is currently closed. Elm Street itself is anticipated to close at that point.

The storm sewer pumps will start to run as soon as the river gets close to 19 feet to slow down the rate of flooding.

On Sunday, the river will reach its maximum elevation of 21 feet. By then, the Third Street North underpass in Moorhead will also be closed. The National Weather Service predicts that by next week, the Red River will have returned to normal water levels, so the flooding should be brief.
